The New School Over the course of this semester, our K-7 students have been studying different countries in their home room classes. Each grade was assigned a different place to research and present to the rest of the school. Yesterday, April 30th, was their chance to show us what they had discovered. Each class took its turn touring the Cultural Market.
The Kindergarten classes learned about Arkansas. They showed off their square dancing skills, dug for diamonds, and went wild for the Razorbacks!

The first grade classes brought to life a Farmer's Market with a look into America.

The second grade classes had a fiesta in Mexico!

The third graders taught us about Taiwan. Students were able to plant a seed with a native flower, and release lanterns into the sky!

Fourth grade took us on a safari adventure through South Africa.

The fifth graders showcased their knowledge of India, complete with a yoga lesson.

Sixth graders setup a Cuban Marketplace. You could use "pesos" to purchase traditional jewelry and snacks.

The seventh graders rounded up the journey in Iran. They created a video about the history of the country, and had a rice farmer demonstration.

Great job to all the students and teachers!

The New School
The Duke Talent Search, sponsored through Duke University, seeks to identify students with exceptional academic abilities. Each year, a great percentage of students at The New School qualify to participate in this prestigious program; and this year is no exception. Sixty percent of our 7th grade students qualified to participate in the Duke TIP program, which is well above the national average of thirty percent. Selected students are invited to take the ACT or SAT college entrance exams in 7th grade. Those who score well are provided with additional resources and opportunities for accelerated students.
Duke TIP evaluates score levels to benchmark against the national percentile rankings (NPR) for high school junior and seniors. Five of our 7th grade students won State Recognition for their scores on the ACT or SAT through the Duke Above-Level Testing Program, which is set at the 50th NPR for high school students. Congratulations to Zachary C., Nathan F., Andrew L., Rhett O., and Kate P. on this accomplishment.
One student will be honored with Grand Recognition, which is achieved in the 90th NPR or above. Nathan F. will be recognized at the national ceremony in Durham, North Carolina for his exceptional performance on the ACT.
Congratulations to all of our participants. You are great ambassadors of The New School.

The New School On Tuesday, April 16th, Chef Josh hosted a Food Show with 4 vendors in attendance, representing over 40 different food companies. Members of Student Council along with representatives from lower grades chosen at random, had an opportunity to try a variety of foods from pizza and chicken nuggets, to juice boxes and muffins. All of the products presented were healthy school options with the majority being containing ample servings of whole wheat and whole grains. The feedback we got from students will help us begin to make positive, students approved, menu changes in the coming months and into next school year.
