2nd Grade Raises $3780 for NWA Children's Shelter

Last week, The New School's 2nd graders wrapped up their holiday project on earning and giving with a HUGE donation to the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter. After a week of selling tasty treats and hand-made crafts, the 2nd grade class raised $3,780! This year's annual Holiday Store project began in November when 2nd grade students applied for a loan from Liberty Bank. They used the money they were awarded to purchase supplies for their holiday store and spent the next few weeks working hard to make all of the items themselves.

After a hugely successful week, selling out of almost everything they made, they gathered their earnings, and took a field trip to Walmart to buy toys, clothing and other needed items for kids at the Children's Shelter. After filling many shopping carts with supplies, students met with representatives from the Children's Shelter who spoke to them about the kids they were helping, answered questions, and accepted a check. 4029 News even covered the event! The New School is grateful to our 2nd grade teachers, Andrea Hadfield and Laura Apperson, as well as all the 2nd grade parents who helped out. Thanks to everyone's involvement, these students have learned a valuable lesson of earning and giving. To summarize the most important message of this unit, we'll borrow a quote from 2nd grader Jennings Hix who reminds us:

"When you get something, you feel good for a few days. When you give something, the feeling lasts forever!"

We couldn't have set it better ouselves.
