Enrichment Programs

Students can take advantage of our great Extended-Day Program. A wide variety of activities are provided for enrichment, learning, and just plain fun. Students who stay to participate in our afterschool program are offered a variety of activities. Students not enrolled in classes rotate between recess, computer lab, games in the library, and other activities. Students are also given the opportunity to complete classwork in study hall.

Ceramics

Ceramics classes offer students a great way to express themselves as artists! Classes are held in the Baledge Arts Annex and students’ hand-built pieces are fired on site in our new kiln. Our upper elementary art teacher, Carolyn Hughes, instructs all of the listed ceramic classes.

Golf

Students learn the basics of golf during this nine week course.  Students travel to Stonebridge Meadows for fun and instruction at the driving range. At the end of the nine weeks students play a round at The Greens at Lakeside Village. This class is scheduled for the first nine weeks of school. Class will not be held on Labor Day.

Tennis

The New School in conjunction with Summerhill Racquet Club offers students the opportunity to get hooked on tennis - a great life-time sport!  Equipment will be  provided by the United States Tennis Association. Classes are offered on a weekly basis for the entire school year, and will begin on the first Tuesday of the Fall Semester.  The tennis instructor will assign appropriate level.

Basketball

In conjunction with the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club, The New School sponsors basketball teams for students in grades 1-5.  The season for Grades 1 & 2 will begin in November and the season for older students will begin in January.  Our school provides coaches, and practices are held in our gym during the afterschool hours.  Registration forms will be put into parents’ files when we receive them from FBGC.

Basketball Clinic

Our basketball clinic offers students more instruction in our basketball program. Students enrolled in the clinic receive group instruction in team-work, hand-eye coordination, and skill development. These clinics help prepare our students for playing on one of our New School teams. Classes begin the first full week the Fall Semester. There will not be class on Labor Day.

Dance

The New School Dance Arts program offers classes at various instructional levels for all age groups.  The goal of the program is to help students derive aesthetic understanding and appreciation of the art form as well as good technique.

Ballet

Ballet can best be described as the foundation for all dance.  Our classes will be geared toward helping students develop a strong foundation in technique with an emphasis on muscle development and memory.

Jazz

Jazz takes basic ballet principles and translates them into a uniquely American art form.  Jazz class will study classic jazz styles of Luigi, Gus Giordano, Bob fosse, and Leigh Darwin while continuing work on movement, jumps, turns, and basic bodyline.  Students taking Jazz should be enrolled in a ballet or technique class.

Modern Dance

Modern Dance allows more free flowing movement and creative-based classes.  Classes will touch on Graham and Horton techniques.  Modern should also accompany a ballet or technique class.

Tap

Tap is an integral part of the dance program because of its ability to teach rhythm and musicality.  Though ballet classes are strongly encouraged, tap classes may be taken without an accompanying ballet class.

Modern Technique

Technique Class is a non-recital class designed to help meet ballet requirements for Jazz and Modern students.  It is also an excellent placement for older students beginning ballet.

Kindergarten Dance

Kindergarten Dance is designed to encourage an enjoyment of movement and to present an introduction to basic dance.

Dance Class Policies

Foreign Language

Currently, the school is offering classes in Mandarin Chinese. The class will intergrate all aspects of Mandarin Chinese including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics and vocabulary.  The class will focus on developing students’ pronunciation skills (Pin Yin/Chinese phonetic alphabet), listening and comprehension skills, writing of basic strokes and composition of characters.  The class will also introduce Chinese culture through class activities.

Drama

Arts Live's Dare to Be an Actor

Learn the fundamentals of being an actor and discover the daring challenges of theatre.  Begin training through an introduction to theatre terms, visualization and improvisation.  Explore the actor’s craft through theatre games and beginning scene/monologue work.

There will be a showcase performance at the end of each session.

Violin

The objective of our string program is to teach students music reading skills and basic string techniques for the violin.  Students work individually with Ms. Jongim Ryan, the instructor, for one thirty-minute  session a week and in weekly group sessions with students grouped according to level of ability. Parents are always welcome to attend, but their participation is not a requirement of the program. Instruments may be rented or purchased.

Piano

The New School is pleased to offer this new program at the school for the second year. The objective of our piano program is to teach students basic techniques for the piano and music reading skills.  Students work individually with our piano instructors for one thirty-minute session a week.  Lessons focus on proper tone and playing technique. Parents are always welcome to attend, but their participation is not a requirement of the program.  Student’s achievement will be highlighted in a Spring Piano Recital in the school’s Arts Annex.
