Meet Mary Kim Harp

Mary Kim Harp, Technology Integration Specialist

Education: B.A. in English with a double minor in Religion and Women's Studies from Mars Hill College.

M.A. in English Literature from The University of Arkansas.

About Me

Every job that I've ever had somehow prepared me for my job at The New School. I have been a Camp Counselor, a tutor in everything from SAT Prep to College Algebra, a Resident Assistant, and a lead teacher in a classroom full of 3-year-olds. After starting at New School as an afternoon assistant in Preschool, I became a full-time substitute, giving me the opportunity to really see every side of The New School family. The next summer, Mr. Bill asked me to help write the school’s Annual Report. Over that summer, I was able to show off my tech skills to Ms. Angel. That tech savvy (and my years of teaching experience) got me an offer to teach Technology for 3rd-7th grade. The path may have been roundabout, but it led me to an unexpected dream job.

Meet Matt Harp

Matt Harp, Middle School Language Arts Teacher

Education: B.A. in English, University of Arkansas; M.A. in English, University of Arkansas; M.A.T., Univerisity of Arkansas.

I have lived in Arkansas my entire life and in Fayetteville since 1998. After finishing my various degrees, I was looking for a teaching position, and my then fiancé, Mary Kim, told me that there was an opening at The New School where she was subbing at the time. I interviewed with Angel and realized that, at The New School, I would have more license to be creative and that I would have a genuine opportunity to affect the lives of my students, what they knew and how they thought.

Meet Melissa Campbell

Melissa Campbell, 1st Grade Teacher

Education: B.S. in Early Childhood Education, University of Arkansas

I started working at The New School in 1998 as an 18 year-old studying art at the University of Arkansas. My college roommate was working in the preschool program at the time and suggested that I apply. After an interview with Ms. Karen, that application turned into a short stint as a substitute and then an afternoon preschool position. Under the guidance of some amazing and energetic teachers, I was inspired to change my major to early childhood education and I moved into the kindergarten program serving as the kindergarten assistant and summer camp teacher. Upon my graduation, a lead teacher position opened in the kindergarten program. The timing could not have been more perfect! I began my first year as an official teacher in 2002. I spent four years in kindergarten followed by three years in fourth grade and finally landed in first grade. I am currently enjoying my third year as a first grade teacher.
