K-8 Admission Procedures

The K-8 admission process at The New School is a thoughtful choice by both prospective families and the school. The ultimate goal for this process is to assure both school and family that the applicant will thrive in The New School's learning environment and will be well served by all that our unique educational opportunities offer.

A successful New School candidate -- at whatever entry point -- is a child who demonstrates a developmentally appropriate amount of independence, openness and curiosity. We are looking for applicants who can perform on or above grade level, both academically and socially.

If you have any questions about the admissions process or about the programs offered, please do not hesitate to call or email. We look forward to getting to know you and your child as we start the process to assure that The New School is the perfect place for you.

Step 4: Shadow Day Classroom Visitation and Assessments

Because admission to The New School is based primarily on individual developmental readiness, the assessments are a vital part of our admission process and decision. After completing and submitting the application and fee, assessment/shadow days will be scheduled.

Kindergarten applicants will schedule a walk-in assessment for readiness to our specific kindergarten program. Kindergarten applicants must turn five years old by August 1st of the school year they are applying.

Grades 1-8 applicants will schedule shadow days to join their peers in their current grade and participate in assessments. Application for admission and $75 application fee must be submitted before scheduling a shadow visit.

General results from these assessments will be shared with parents/guardians, however, copies of the actual assessment will remain in the applicant's confidential application file.

Step 5: Decision Process for Admission

It is the responsibility of the applicant's parents/guardians to ensure that all materials have been received by the Admission Office. Once all steps are completed, the Admission Committee will review all documents to determine whether the student and The New School are an appropriate match.

Step 6: Enrollment

Upon notification of acceptance, the online enrollment process will be begin. The Enrollment Contract and an Enrollment Fee are required to reserve the student's space in The New School.
