Lower School (Grades K-4)

Welcome to The New School’s Lower School! There is a special spirit in our division where students and teachers are genuinely engaged and building life-long relationships. We believe that the most powerful learning occurs when children are purposefully engaged in a constructive and supportive environment. Our dedicated faculty seeks to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters students’ various stages of development. Most importantly, our teachers build a rapport with each individual student, so they can set the bar high for academic success.

Together our Lower School teachers have over a century of teaching experience, and each one strives to ensure that our program builds on the school’s successful reputation.

We consider all that we know about the Lower School child and create a curriculum, schedule, and program that best meet the needs of this age. We promote student independence and ownership by teaching in small groups. While setting the foundation for all academic areas and constantly introducing new concepts, we understand that not all students learn at the same pace. Our curriculum and schedule allow us to move students through material at a pace that best meets their learning style.

We know that our world is constantly changing and becoming increasingly interconnected and complex. We are preparing students for future careers that may not exist today. We accept that it is our responsibility to foster a learning environment where our students know how to effectively collaborate, think critically, and express themselves. The integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) has long been a part of our curriculum. Our integrated interdisciplinary curriculum provides our students the opportunity to explore and inquire, as our teachers guide them to better understand the world around them.

The New School’s community depends on a strong partnership between parents and the school. We value the vital role that parents play in supporting our mission. We invite our parents to share expertise in the classroom, volunteer on field trips or fundraisers, and encourage learning outside of school.

I encourage you to schedule a tour of our school, and you’ll see that it is indeed a special place. We appreciate your interest in learning more about our school.

Sincerely,

Angel Petet

Head of Lower School
